For some, yesterday was a beautiful day to play flag football or walk to Dairy Queen to get a blizzard, but for the brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha, it marked the one-year anniversary of their brother and former president Thomas Hayn's death.
Lambda Chi Alpha hosted a memorial service in the backyard of their fraternity house for Hayn, a junior, who died from injuries suffered in a car accident by a drunk driver in his hometown of Parma, Ohio last April.
More than 100 students and faculty members came together to honor Hayn's memory. The audience listened to biblical verses and words from fraternity brothers and the director of Cru and honorary initiate of the fraternity, Michael Brown, to speak on behalf of Hayn.
"Tom was a great man," Brown said. "But most of all he was an honorable man."
Brown also performed Hayn's memorial service last year at Olscamp.
During the memorial service, Brown reflected back to when Hayn filled out the application for Man of Honor.
"Jan. 26, 2006 is when Tom sent his application for Man of Honor through e-mail," Brown said. "I cherish this e-mail because it's like I can hear from Tom in his own words."
Brown said Hayn displayed the six qualities of a worthy candidate for the Man of Honor.
"Tom's life reflected the qualities of friendship, life giving, integrity, character, honesty and loyalty," he said.
Hayn reflected the quality of life giving because he was refreshing to be around. He reflected integrity because he kept promises and loyalty because he never spoke poorly about his brothers behind their backs, Brown said.
And Brown said he has tried to be there for the brothers every step of the way.
"Tom got into the car accident the night before Easter and was put on life support for four days," Brown said. "Those four days were very intense for these guys."
Brown and the fraternity brothers drove to Metro Health Medical Center in Cleveland and Brown took two brothers at a time into the hospital room to say their good byes before Hayn was taken off life support.
